Research Request

Want to know more about that wonderful old clock sitting in your parlor?

The museum houses an excellent research library and a collection of clocks and watches from the 17th century to the present. Coupled with the expertise of our resident Horologist, Chris Bailey, we can find information on almost any American-made timekeeper. Providing the clock was made in America, the museum staff may be able to provide historical data on American clock and watch makers, manufacturing firms, information that will assist in identifying your clock or watch, it’s model name, production dates and other details.

Over the years, interest in American clocks and watches has grown enormously and our museum has experienced a tremendous increase in the number of requests for horological information. The process of tracing the fascinating history of timepieces is extremely time and labor intensive. With limited staff and funding it has become necessary to charge a minimal research fee of $40.00 for museum research services. Research fees are non-refundable, regardless of results.

A Word About Values:

“Curators may estimate insurance values for loans and internal use, and with the permission of their museum for other non-profit institutions, but they must not prepare appraisals for gifts, objects to be deaccessioned, private purchase or sale, or any other reason.”
American Association of Museum’s Curators’ Code of Ethics

We understand many people are curious about the value of their clocks and watches, but by policy, the museum staff cannot appraise items or discuss present-day values, even so-called “ball park” figures. Many antique clock and watch price guides (for many 19th century manufactured items) are available through bookstores and libraries or ordered through our gift shop.  Early hand-made items may have significant value and may need to be evaluated by a qualified appraiser. The American Society of Appraisers at (800) 272-8258 may be able to assist you in finding an appraiser.

Please fill out the request for research form and include the minimum photo and information requirements and fees for each individual research request. Requests should be limited to information on American-made clocks and watches only. By museum policy, the present day market-values of timepieces will not be discussed. You can expect a response to your research request in approximately four to six weeks.
